So your mom and dad run a successful business and they’ve been nagging you to take a job for months. It sounds like a great offer. After all, you start making a semi-decent living straight away, you get to work with your family and, when your folks eventually retire, you’ll be the boss. But something doesn’t feel right. You’re concerned about your future. You keep wondering if heading into the family business will be the biggest mistake of your life.

Joining the family business is a life-altering decision. That’s why you must carefully consider the offer before you decide to commit. Going to work in any business carries a certain level of risk. That’s why it’s important that you understand the economic and emotional consequences that come with taking a job in the family business.

Five questions you need to ask yourself before getting into the family business:

• Will the family business boost your career?
• It’s important to know what you want out of life and if the family business will satisfy you long-term career goals. Career satisfaction is super important. That’s why you need to make sure that you are passionate about the business and if it will help you achieve your dreams. If you’re fortunate enough to learn from the business and apply your knowledge to your career goals, then this could be an easy way for you to kick-start your career. If it doesn’t then you should reconsider and follow a career path more closely suited to your personal needs.

• Is the business something you are proud of and want to continue its legacy? You may already know quite a bit about the business from your parents talking about it. But is it something you would be proud to be associated with?

• Do you really want to work with your family? Some people believe that family and business don’t mix. And some families struggle to communicate effectively and this can put strain on working and personal relationships. But other families get along extremely well. If you’re comfortable taking a job where you need to take instructions and interact with your family on a daily basis, you’ll do fine.

• Are there any other jobs that tickle your fancy? There’s nothing worse than getting into a job that you hate because you didn’t want to upset daddy and mommy. Taking a job for a pay cheque will only make you regret your decision and eventually cause rifts between you and your family. So if you have other dreams and aspirations, speak to your family respectfully and let them know that you want to go into a different field.

• Do you have an exit strategy? Maybe you’re not sure about what you want out of life yet. Working in the family business is a great way to gain some experience and find some direction. So take the job but plan your exit strategy by knowing what you want to do if this doesn’t work out and how you will go about it.

We all want to make our parents proud. Heading into the family business might make them happy but leave you disappointed and upset. Consider your options before you decide either way and do it amicably so that if things don’t work out well elsewhere you can always opt for the family business later if you decide to pursue your own career.
