How to get your Driver’s Licence

You can only legally drive a vehicle if you have a Driver’s License. In order to get a Driver’s license, you need to have passed your Learner’s License.

For a motorcycle, you need to get a Code 1 license, for a car, minibus or bus, you need a Code 2 license and for a truck, you need a Code 3 license.

Here’s how to get your Driver’s License:

You can learn how to drive with a parent, older sibling, friend or other family member, or you can go for professional lessons with a driving school. You should be able to get a good grasp of the K53 system within about ten lessons with a driving school, so don’t let them tell you that you need to go for lessons for 6 months or a year.

Also, get a referral from someone you know for a reputable driving school. There are a few driving schools that have been known to extort their customers.

When you book your Driver’s License, you have to go into the testing station and you need to take the following with you:

• Your Learner's Licence.
• ID

• Four identical black-and-white photographs.
• The booking fee (phone the testing station to get the latest fee)
• Proof of postal and residential address, so take a utility account with you. If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must get an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit. 
• If you stay in an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your postal and residential address.

The driving test is a practical test, which means you go out into the road and parking area with an examiner who will ask assess the way you drive and test your parking ability.
