Here’s why you should consider a part-time business

When you’re at school and everyone is asking you want you’re going to study, you may feel pressurised to choose to study instead of going straight to work or starting your own business.

But if you can, run your little part-time business on the side to get extra cash and to do the things you love, like DJing, singing, acting, etc.

If you do this, it will stand you in good stead, should you lose your job one day if you get retrenched or if you get tired of your day job and want to start a new business.

Think about what you used to spend hours on because you loved it so much. That’s a good place to start any business:

• Dancing: If you were really good at dancing, open a dance studio. There are very few young people that don’t want to dance.
• Art: Offer something unique that schools don’t offer and watch your studio fill up with young art enthusiasts.
• Baking: Have you seen what the demand is for good quality birthday cakes and more contemporary cupcakes and cake lollies? It’s a favourite if you’re talented in that field.
• DJing: Every party needs a good vibe and beat to keep the guests happy! If you have what it takes, make a noise about it!
• Tattoo artistry: It’s a relatively easy business to set up if you have the skills. A bit of marketing will put you on the map.
• Event marketing: If you can show how you could make a company’s client base feel special and want the client’s product, you can carve yourself a nice little business!

It’s always good to have a back-up plan in case your career doesn’t take off and it offers you an outlet at the end of the day to go to after a stressful day at the office.
