How to build a profitable business
How to build a profitable business
A very important success factor for any business is profitability. Unless a business starts bringing in more income than it spends and owes in the planned period of time, it will not survive.
Besides having good products or services to sell, there are other characteristics that every business needs to become profitable.
Here are six steps to building a profitable business:
- A good team: You need to have people in your business that can challenge views and come up with creative ideas to do things better. These could be employees or partners or advisors. The key is that they focus on the business rather than trying to please you.
- Make brave decisions: There will be many times when you will have to make business decisions that could be risky. For example, if you decide you want to franchise your business or open another branch. It’s extra expense, the city or country you’re going into has its own set of problems, you will have to delegate the management of the different branches to other people, etc. But if you can manage these risks, you could make a lot more profit than just focusing on the exiting office.
- Be patient: Don’t expect to get rich quickly. It takes hard work and time to build a business. If you’re too hasty, you will take unnecessary risks and you could jeopardise your business.
- Be committed: You can’t go into a business thinking, ‘well if it doesn’t work out, too bad’. You’re unlikely to make it work. You have to apply an attitude that says, ‘whatever happens, I will make it work and I will do whatever it takes’. If you have that kind of determination, very little will stop you.
- Be bold: You will need to go out there and sell your services or products. You cannot be shy and intimidated by others. If you know that you can add value to your clients, you can confidently tell them how you can help them. That’s the best way to sell!
- Admit it when you’re wrong: A good leader will make mistakes just like everyone else but they will come out and say, ‘I have made a mistake’. They won’t try to hide their mistakes or camouflage them. They will use their mistake as an opportunity to learn along with their staff from it.
Remember, none of these steps will be possible if you don’t have a good product or service to sell to start off with. But everything is possible if you have a good product and service and these six steps to grow a profitable business.
