What you should know before investing in a franchise
Franchising is one of the best business models ever invented and it has provided many people with a great investment. But not all franchises are the same so you need to consider a few things before you buy a franchise.
- Cost: Some franchises don’t require a huge capital outlay while others do. You need to weigh up what your appetite for risk is and how much you’re willing to commit to in order to get your business off the ground.
- Value for money: Shop around. Some franchisors provide the bare minimum while others give you a lot of business support. If you are an experienced businessperson, you may not need someone to hold your hand through the process and may prefer to have the freedom to operate semi-independently, while if you’re new at it, you’ll want as much as support as you can get.
- Compliance: If there’s one thing all franchises have in common, it’s that they all comply to a set of rules. You won’t be able to decide not to stock an item, for instance, if it’s being advertised by head office. If you can’t tolerate working in a structured environment with lots of rules, you won’t like being a franchisee.
- Entrepreneurial spirit: even though you didn’t come up with the business idea, you still need to be entrepreneurial. You will have challenges and opportunities that you will need to be capable of handling.
- Interests: Try to find a franchise that matches your interests. You don’t want to be stuck in a shop selling burgers all day if you love health-food. You’ve got to be passionate about the business.
- Location: This is really important when you start a business. If you start a business in the wrong area, you could go out of business as quickly as you started it.
- Franchise Disclosure Document: This is the document that explains what you will get, how much you will pay, what you can expect your revenue to be etc. Make sure you get a lawyer and anyone you know that has a good sense of business to look at it and make sure it’s solid.
- Make it your own: Don’t settle for mediocre profits and franchisor templates. Make it your own and decide from day one that you will exceed all expectations. Put everything you have into it.
Franchises can make running a business easier because you know it’s a working model and you get business support from the franchisor. Whatever you decide, remember, doing your homework is really important.
