How to help yourself get ahead in college or university
When you get to college or university, it’s up to you to make it work. You need to figure out where to go, what to do, who to go to when you’re not getting it and everything else in between. Your marks are your business and your responsibility – yours alone!
As scary as this may seem, it’s preparing you for the working world. When you get to the real world of work, it’s all up to you to make a success of yourself or a failure…
Here’s how to make sure you succeed in college and university:
- Get organised: Make sure you know where to go, when to be there, what you need to prepare and when you write. Then be sure to do the work and study for the exams and do all the assignments.
- Go to classes: It may feel like fun to be able to not get out of bed after a heavy night out or when it’s really cold, but if you don’t go to class, you will miss out on a lot. Don’t rely on your peers to pass on the info to you, you will quickly learn that you will be disappointed if you do.
- Read up ahead of class: Get to a place where you have summarized your work you covered in class and you’re reading up on your work ahead of class so that you can ask questions about it in class. Tomorrow is a different lecture, so you will have lost the opportunity. It will also help you to take in the information and you will do better in tests and exams if you do this.
- Know what works for you: By now you must know how you study best. Is it mindmaps, lists, rewriting info, etc? Just keep at it because you have a lot more work to get through now, so don’t think you can do it the night before an exam.
- Get to know your lecturers: Build a relationship with your lecturers. Let them see that you are trying hard and have a genuine interest in the subject. They will help you along if they are convinced you are worth helping.
Use these tips to help you succeed at university or college. Don’t let your grades slide because your parents and your teachers aren’t on you like a rash anymore. Understand that this is your life now and you are solely responsible for what happens in it.
